Payments + Insurance

  • Depending on the age, it is preferred to have a parent/caregiver present in order to be able to support their child at home. Research shows that the most gains are made with participation at home. That being said, there may be some instances where having your child on their own may be warranted or beneficial.

  • The length of the session depends on what works best for you and your child.

Generally, we book for 60 minute sessions, which includes 45 minutes of direct one-on-one time with the Speech-Language Pathologist, plus 15 minutes of preparation and documentation time.

  • An assessment visit generally includes a medical history of your child, which can be completed ahead of time. It also includes a discussion about the main areas of concern and goals for the child, as well as informal observations of your child during play (structured and free-play).

Formal standardized testing may be suggested after this initial assessment, when appropriate.

  • In general, sessions will take place at the Oshawa location (or virtually).

Depending on COVID restrictions and availability, sessions in other locations may be possible if desired and beneficial to the child. Note that the travel time is not included in our usual rates.

Note that virtual sessions are also offered, and provide a great deal of flexibility to families.

  • Talk Together is not currently affiliated with any specific teams or professionals, but we are happy to consult and discuss therapy goals etc. within a team framework. Parental consent would be required in order to connect/release any information about your child outside of our practice.

  • No referral is needed to see an SLP, however, your insurance policy may require a referral in order to cover your child’s sessions.

  • In general, if you have concerns it may be better to seek help and get suggestions that will help to support your child's speech and language development. Getting this help does not mean that your child will need immediate/intensive therapy but that you may have some of your concerns alleviated by seeking out advice and having them checked.

  • Booked appointments require 24 hours’ notice in order to cancel. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice will incur a 50% fee.

  • Yes, a written report is available for your child’s assessment and progress, upon request. Note that report-writing time is billable at our regular rates.

  • Generally, payment is due at the end of each session. Our preferred payment method is electronic money transfer (Interac). We also accept Visa and MasterCard.

  • We do not bill directly to insurance providers. Patients and families are responsible for payment after each session and for submitting the invoices to their insurance company for reimbursement.

Note that some insurance providers require a referral to an SLP in order to cover the fees.

  • SLP services are not covered by OHIP.

Many private/employer extended health plans provide some level of coverage for SLP services. The amounts covered vary between policies. Contact your plan administrator for more details.
